Synopsis
Talking with Rivers is a conversation between Iran and Afghanistan, two neighbouring countries that used to be one land. The two countries are now sharing their stories after they parted from each other, from the era of Soviet invasion to the civil war and the Taliban era, up to and including the rise and fall of America and the return of the Taliban.

I saw this picutre as a double bill before the film The List by Hana Makhmalbaf, and I strongly recommend you to watch these two in this order.
On one hand, the History of Afghanistan's gradual destruction, culturally, economically, politically, ethically. The end of a Country, already separated from his brother, Iran. A dialogue between two voices, in front of a river, reflecting on all the causes that brought death and destruction. Scenes from the precious films of the Makhmalbaf family (Mohsen, his wife and especially his daughters) retrace the recent history of Afghanistan, for the last 40 years, until 2021, when the Taliban inhuman regime brought all back to the Stone Age. Dealing with this last theme, The List… -

A haunting and poetic dialogue between two nations, and a lamentation over the destructive futility of war. But also, a moving testament to the power of cinema to change hearts and inspire us to see the world differently.
